AI music went from a novelty to genuinely professional output in about 18 months. The models got better. But the biggest variable isn't the model. It's the prompt. And most people are still prompting like it's 2023.

Where AI Music Was

Two years ago, AI-generated music was a party trick. You could tell it was AI within five seconds. The vocals warbled. The structure wandered. The production sounded like it was mixed in a bathroom. It was interesting as a concept and useless as a product.

I wasn't using it then. Nobody serious was. The gap between what AI produced and what you'd actually listen to was too wide.

Where AI Music Is Now

Today I play AI-generated music in my cafe every day. Customers don't know. They don't ask "is this AI?" They ask "what playlist is this?" The tracks sound professional. Some of them sound exceptional.

Here's what a prompt that produces professional output looks like:

indie folk, warm, finger-picked acoustic guitar, brushed snare, upright bass, male vocals, tenor, gentle delivery, building verse to soaring chorus, vintage analog warmth

Same intent. Completely different result. Every word in the second prompt is doing specific work. "Finger-picked" tells Suno the guitar technique. "Brushed snare" specifies the drum character. "Tenor, gentle delivery" sets the vocal texture. "Building verse to soaring chorus" defines the energy arc. "Vintage analog warmth" sets the production style.

This is what I mean by the prompt being the variable. The model was always capable of great output. We just weren't giving it the right instructions.

The Knowledge Stack

Producing consistently great AI music requires knowledge most people don't have. Not because it's secret, but because it comes from repetition.
